What is 'Contextual Focus', and why is it relevant?
One of the key psychological bases of creativity is ‘Contextual Focus’. It’s the human brain’s ability to focus or defocus attention - shifting our mode of thought between associative and analytic modes.
Creativity and innovation emerge from the shift between these two forms of thought.
New ideas, insights, and creative thinking germinate in a defocused, associative state, where many dimensions of a situation can be viewed. Shifting to a focused state, those ideas are refined to filter out the irrelevant and focus on the relevant.
